If you have a Homeowners Loss:

  • When it is safe to do so, protect your property from any further damage including “reasonable and necessary repairs” such as covering holes in the roof, wall, doors and windows.
  • Don’t make extensive permanent repairs until a claims adjuster has assessed the damage.
  • Contact your insurance agent or insurance company.
  • Make a list of damaged items
    • Use your home inventory if available
    • Or, if possible, put together an inventory using receipts, bill and photograph
    • If none of these are options, try picturing each room and make a list from memory
  • Save receipts
  • Don’t throw out expensive damaged items such as furniture as the adjuster may need to see these items
  • Make a list of items you would like to show the adjuster
